The blockbuster trade that would send Kawhi Leonard from the LA Clippers to the Toronto Raptors has been placed on hold. According to multiple reports, the deal will not be finalized until the NBA concludes its probe into whether the Clippers violated salary cap rules.
The Raptors remain eager to reunite with Leonard, sources told Yahoo Sports, but the league's investigation has created an indefinite pause. The delay could also impact the trade market for other players, including a young star whose future may be tied to the outcome, Yahoo reported.
The probe centers on whether the Clippers improperly structured contracts or benefits to gain a cap advantage. If violations are found, the team could face penalties ranging from fines to forfeiture of draft picks, potentially altering the trade's terms or blocking it entirely.
The Clippers declined to comment on the investigation. For now, both franchises are in a holding pattern as they await the league's findings before proceeding with the deal.
"We're still very interested in bringing Kawhi back to Toronto," a Raptors official told ESPN. "But we have to respect the process and let the NBA do its work."
