Merck has launched a drug discovery collaboration with Protillion Biosciences, combining Merck's therapeutic expertise with Protillion's Prot-MaP™ on-chip antibody discovery platform. The deal, structured as a multi-target discovery collaboration and license agreement, carries up to $510 million in milestone payments.

Protillion's platform, dubbed Protein Display on a Massively Parallel Array (Prot-MaP™), uses artificial intelligence to accelerate antibody discovery. The technology aims to streamline the identification of novel therapeutic candidates across multiple targets, though specific disease areas were not disclosed.

No upfront payment figure was provided in the announcement. The collaboration focuses on early-stage research, with Protillion eligible for development and commercialization milestones along with royalties on any resulting products.

For Merck, the partnership bolsters its AI-driven R&D pipeline without the overhead of building the technology in-house. Protillion gains access to Merck's global development and commercialization infrastructure, a significant validation for the startup's platform.

The deal reflects the broader industry trend of big pharma turning to AI-native biotechs for drug discovery efficiency. However, such platform-based collaborations remain unproven at scale, with few AI-discovered candidates having reached late-stage trials.

A key caveat: milestone-dependent deals often see only a fraction of the headline value realized, as most early-stage candidates fail before reaching the clinic. Additionally, the lack of disclosed upfront payment suggests a risk-sharing structure that could limit near-term revenue for Protillion.
