Meta has quietly released Pocket, an experimental app that enables users to create and share interactive mini games using AI text prompts, as reported by Business Insider and TechCrunch. The launch follows CEO Mark Zuckerberg's vision of AI as the next iteration of social media, where users craft interactive experiences for sharing.
Pocket appears to be the first concrete product embodying this concept, built partly on technology from Atma Sciences Inc., which developed a similar app called Gizmo. Meta acquired a non-exclusive license to that company's tech and hired several of its engineers in March, according to Business Insider.
The app does not yet have a public revenue model or user base data, and Meta has not formally announced it. Early reports describe it as an experimental platform focused on lightweight, user-generated content rather than a full-scale social network.
Analysts view Pocket as a test bed for Meta's broader AI ambitions, potentially integrating generative AI into its core family of apps including Facebook and Instagram. If successful, it could shift how users engage with content on Meta's platforms.
Yet skepticism remains. Critics question whether consumers will embrace AI-generated micro-games as a durable social medium, and note that similar experiments from other tech giants have failed to gain traction.
