Rocket Lab announced it is acquiring Iridium, a satellite telecommunications company, for $8 billion. The deal marks a strategic push to transform the launch provider into a vertically integrated space company with both launch and satellite communication assets.

The acquisition gives Rocket Lab Iridium's constellation of 66 low-Earth orbit satellites, which provide global voice and data services. The combined entity aims to offer end-to-end space solutions, from spacecraft manufacturing and launch to in-orbit operations and communications.

No specific timeline for closing the deal has been disclosed. The announcement comes as Rocket Lab continues to scale its Neutron rocket development and expand beyond its primary launch business.

The move positions Rocket Lab to compete with larger players like SpaceX and Boeing by offering a broader range of space services. Iridium's established customer base, which includes defense and maritime sectors, provides immediate revenue streams and cross-selling opportunities.

Industry analysts caution that integrating a large satellite network operator poses execution risks, and the $8 billion price tag may strain Rocket Lab's finances given its smaller revenue base compared to the acquisition cost.
