Fidji Simo, OpenAI's head of product and business, announced Thursday she is stepping down after experiencing a "severe exacerbation" of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, a chronic condition diagnosed in 2019. She had been on medical leave since April, during which OpenAI President Greg Brockman handled product duties. Simo will remain as a part-time advisor.
The departure removes one of the most prominent executives at the high-profile AI company. Simo joined OpenAI in 2025 after leading Instacart through its IPO and spending over a decade at Meta. Her exit comes as OpenAI continues to scale its consumer and enterprise applications.
"I am only making this decision now because I failed to make it many times before," Simo wrote on X, noting she sees growing opportunities for AI applications in health. CEO Sam Altman responded on the platform, saying he is "really sad about this and very grateful" and wishing her a speedy recovery.
Simo's transition to an advisory role means OpenAI retains some continuity, though her absence leaves a gap in business and product leadership. Brockman's interim oversight of product may be extended as the firm searches for a long-term replacement.
The Wall Street Journal first reported the news. Observers will watch whether OpenAI names an external hire or promotes from within to fill her role.
