Apple is reportedly developing an M7 Ultra variant of the Mac Studio, targeting a 2028 release. The news comes from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who suggests the machine could bring a 'major upgrade' beyond a simple chip bump.

The current Mac Studio lineup features M4 Max and M3 Ultra chips, having launched in early 2025. Its upcoming refresh, expected later this year, will introduce M5 Max and M5 Ultra processors—a long overdue update for the high-end desktop.

That M5-based model is described as a straightforward chip upgrade, with no word on other design changes. By contrast, the 2028 M7 Ultra edition is said to involve more substantial alterations, though specifics remain unclear.

If the 2028 timeline holds, the M7 Ultra would arrive roughly three years after the M5 refresh, a similar cadence to previous Studio cycles. That could position it as a flagship workstation for creative professionals and developers.

As usual, all details are based on pre-release reporting and may shift. Apple has not commented on the rumor, and plans could change before final production.
