Two-thirds of the announced lineup for the Freedom 250 concert series have withdrawn, with artists citing fears of being tied to an event critics call a MAGA celebration rather than the nonpartisan patriotic affair organizers promised. Among those who pulled out are Morris Day, Young MC, Martina McBride, Bret Michaels, Milli Vanilli, and The Commodores. The remaining scheduled performers include C+C Music Factory, Vanilla Ice, and Flo Rida.
President Donald Trump responded on Truth Social by announcing an “America Is Back” rally on Wednesday to replace the concert series. In a series of posts, he also lauded his administration's progress on turning the National Mall's reflecting pool blue and denounced a judge's ruling that removed his name from the Kennedy Center.
The departures underscore how partisan divisions now complicate even national celebrations. Michaels said the event “has evolved into something much more divisive than what I agreed to be a part of,” while McBride called the event “misleading.” Young MC cited SPIN magazine's description of the series as Trump-aligned as his reason for withdrawing.
The White House has not commented publicly on the cancellations. Critics of the event argue its billing as nonpartisan was always tenuous given Trump's prominent role in promoting it. Supporters of the president counter that artists are bowing to pressure from liberal activists seeking to politicize a patriotic occasion.
No new performers have been announced to fill the gaps, and it remains unclear whether Wednesday's rally will feature any musical acts. The Freedom 250 concert series was conceived as a centerpiece of the nation's 250th birthday celebrations, which Trump has promoted as a grand patriotic affair.
