PeaceGold, established in 2013 with the local nonprofit Conflict Resolution Center, has signed a supply deal with SigraFi to responsibly source artisanal gold from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The agreement focuses on formalizing artisanal mining operations and reintegrating former combatants into regulated work.

The partnership aims to bring transparency and ethical practices to a sector often plagued by conflict and illicit trade. By certifying supply chains, the deal seeks to reduce smuggling and improve local livelihoods.

Infrastructure investments under the deal will support community-based mining cooperatives, providing equipment and training. This is expected to create stable employment and boost regional economic development.

Geopolitically, the initiative aligns with global efforts to curb conflict minerals and promote responsible sourcing from Central Africa. It also addresses international scrutiny over gold supply chains linked to armed groups.

While the deal marks progress in formalizing artisanal mining, critics argue that without robust enforcement and monitoring, such agreements risk legitimizing informal networks without achieving real change.
