The Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to a one-year contract with veteran center Kevon Looney, according to ESPN sources, as the team simultaneously continues its active pursuit of free agent Jonathan Kuminga.

Looney, a three-time NBA champion with the Golden State Warriors, brings frontcourt depth and playoff experience to a Lakers squad that struggled with interior consistency last season. The 28-year-old averaged 4.5 points and 5.7 rebounds in 16.1 minutes per game during the 2023-24 campaign.

Kuminga, 21, is a restricted free agent whom the Warriors have indicated they intend to match any offer sheet. The dynamic forward averaged 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists last season while shooting 52.5% from the field.

The Lakers' dual approach signals a commitment to upgrading both their frontline and long-term athleticism. Should they land Kuminga, Los Angeles would add a versatile wing who can create his own shot—a skill set that could ease the burden on LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

The Lakers now await the Warriors' decision on any potential offer sheet for Kuminga. Golden State has the right to match any offer and has publicly stated its desire to retain the fourth-year forward. Meanwhile, Looney's one-year deal provides immediate insurance at center.
