Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) published a Substack essay Wednesday advocating for a federal wealth tax that would reach far beyond billionaires. He wrote that the levy "must not stop at billionaires, it must reach centimillionaires," targeting every fortune of $50 million and up.
Khanna endorsed California's November ballot measure to impose a 5% tax on billionaire wealth before laying out his federal vision. The proposal centers on Elizabeth Warren's Ultra-Millionaire Tax Act, which Khanna said he has cosponsored every year since its introduction.
The tax would impose a 2% annual federal levy on wealth above the $50 million threshold, applied on top of existing tax obligations. Khanna also called for the tax to pierce irrevocable trusts, billing the grantor who established them.
Critics argue the proposal could trigger capital flight and penalize long-term wealth creation. Former Microsoft executive Steven Sinofsky quipped, "Just like that, no longer a billionaire" — suggesting thresholds could shift further over time.
Economic implications remain uncertain, as no similar federal wealth tax has been enacted in the U.S. The proposal faces steep political hurdles given current congressional dynamics.
