The body of Nolan Xavier Wells, an 18-year-old college freshman from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, was found Monday on Horn Island, a barrier island roughly 10 miles off the state's Gulf coast. His mother, Christine Wonsley, identified the body on Tuesday, ending a two-day search that drew national attention after Wells vanished following a Fourth of July outing with friends.
Wells and a group of friends had taken a boat trip to the island on July 4. While all his companions returned home that evening, Wells did not, prompting his mother to report him missing and appeal for help on social media. The search effort concluded with the discovery of his remains on the island two days later.
“His father, our family, friends and I are absolutely devastated,” Wonsley wrote in a Facebook post. “My heart is broken for my sweet son who was always willing to cheer and uplift others. Nolan was a special soul, God took his time creating our son.”
The case highlights the risks of recreational boating in remote barrier islands along the Gulf Coast. Local authorities have not yet released a cause of death, pending further investigation.
Wells was described as an uplifting presence by his family. The incident has resonated widely on social media, where his mother’s original plea for help was shared thousands of times before the tragic conclusion.
