Wimbledon has announced a record 20 per cent increase in total prize money for 2026 amid player demands for a larger share of revenues at Grand Slam tournaments.
In a release on Thursday, Wimbledon described the prize pool proliferation as "by far the biggest annual increase in the history of the event." The total prize pot will reach £64.2 million.
The increase comes after players publicly protested at the French Open over the revenue split between Grand Slam organizers and athletes. The All England Club's move appears intended to head off further criticism and maintain harmony with the tour's top stars.
With the 2026 Championships still months away, the record purse sets a new benchmark for the sport. Other Grand Slams may face pressure to follow suit or risk losing player goodwill ahead of their own events.
Wimbledon officials framed the increase as a commitment to the players but did not disclose how much of the new prize money will go to first-round losers versus champions, a perennial point of contention.
