Microsoft has unveiled refreshed versions of its Surface Pro and Surface Laptop, now powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2 processors. The Surface Pro 12th Edition and Surface Laptop 8th Edition are available immediately, succeeding the 2024 models that launched with Snapdragon X1 chips under the Copilot Plus PC initiative.

The update marks a significant step in Microsoft's push for Windows on Arm compatibility, building on the foundation set by the earlier devices. Both models offer 10-core X2 Plus and 12-core X2 Elite chip configurations, with the Laptop coming in 13.8-inch and 15-inch sizes.

Pricing starts at $1,499 for the Surface Pro and $1,599 for the Surface Laptop, a $100 increase over last generation. The Pro ships with 256GB of storage and 16GB of RAM, while the Laptop gains a haptic feedback touchpad. A new jade green color option has also been introduced.

The higher price point may test consumer appetite for Arm-based PCs, especially as competitors like Dell and Lenovo also refresh their Snapdragon lines. Early adopters could benefit from improved performance and battery life, but Windows on Arm still faces software compatibility hurdles.

Some analysts caution that the modest generational leap—primarily a chip upgrade and color change—may not justify the price hike for existing Surface owners. Broader adoption will depend on how well Snapdragon X2 closes the app compatibility gap with x86 software.
