Duolingo has introduced a feature long sought by its users: the ability to revive a permanently lost streak. The offer applies to anyone who previously built a streak of more than 30 days but lost it by missing lessons, and it will only be available from June 1 to June 30.
While Duolingo already offers “streak freezes” that let habitual users pause lessons for short periods, this is the first time the company has allowed revival of a fully dead streak. According to a press release, tens of thousands of learners across more than 80 countries requested this feature on social media in the past year alone.
The move comes as the firm actively prioritizes user growth in 2026. During Duolingo’s Q4 2025 earnings call, CEO Luis von Ahn told investors the company aims to reach 100 million daily active users in the medium term. The streak revival campaign is seen as a tool to re-engage lapsed users and boost retention metrics.
This limited-time offer signals that Duolingo is willing to bend its gamification rules to drive user numbers. However, some observers question whether reviving old streaks dilutes the motivational value of the streak mechanic itself — a core part of the app’s stickiness.
Counter-argument: Streak revival could undermine the integrity of Duolingo’s gamification strategy, potentially reducing the incentive for users to maintain daily consistency if they believe lost streaks can be restored later.
