A new analysis suggests that premium AI subscription plans deliver far more value than previously assumed. Researchers at Semianalysis purchased both Anthropic's Claude Max and OpenAI's ChatGPT Pro plans and ran long coding tasks until hitting weekly limits, finding the token value significantly exceeds the subscription cost.

Common belief held that a $200 monthly plan maxed out at roughly $2,000 worth of tokens based on API pricing. However, this analysis indicates Claude Max offers tokens worth approximately $8,000 per month, while ChatGPT Pro provides around $14,000 worth of tokens monthly.

The researchers tested both services by executing extensive coding tasks, exhausting the weekly caps on each plan. Their methodology involved random long-horizon coding assignments, suggesting practical workloads rather than ideal scenarios.

These findings highlight a potential pricing mismatch between consumer subscriptions and enterprise API rates. For power users and developers, the subscription tiers present a substantial arbitrage opportunity compared to pay-per-token API access.

One caveat: the analysis assumes API pricing as the baseline, which may not account for volume discounts or enterprise agreements that reduce per-token costs for heavy API users.
