The Seattle Kraken have acquired 23-year-old forward Mackie Samoskevich from the Florida Panthers, sending the No. 25 overall pick in Friday's NHL draft back to the defending Stanley Cup champions. The deal, announced Sunday, adds a young playmaker to a Seattle roster that missed the playoffs for the fourth time in five seasons.

Samoskevich, a former first-round pick (No. 24 overall in 2021), has compiled 64 points in 160 career regular-season and playoff games. The University of Michigan product brings much-needed scoring depth to a Kraken offense that struggled to find consistency last season.

The trade highlights divergent roster strategies: Florida, fresh off its championship, restocks draft capital while parting with a prospect who couldn't crack a deep lineup. For Seattle, the move addresses an urgent need for young forward talent after the club's fourth postseason miss in five years of existence.

The Kraken now hold five picks in the first three rounds of the upcoming draft. Florida will look to replenish its prospect pool with the 25th selection after graduating several key players to the NHL roster.

Some analysts question whether Samoskevich, who has yet to establish himself as a top-six forward, represents a sufficient return for a first-round pick. The Panthers, however, gain flexibility in a draft widely considered deep.
