The Houston Astros stunned the visiting Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday night, erasing a five-run deficit to win 9-8 on Yordan Alvarez's walkoff two-run home run. The victory snapped the Rays' nine-game winning streak and handed them just their fourth loss in the past 20 contests.
Alvarez was the engine of the comeback, finishing with three hits and six RBIs. His decisive blast in the bottom of the ninth capped a night in which the Astros chipped away relentlessly, plating runs in five different innings. Tampa Bay starter Taj Bradley had staked his team to an early lead, but the bullpen could not hold it.
The loss, however, did little to damage the Rays' position in the AL East standing — they remain comfortably atop the division. For Houston, the win keeps them within striking distance of the AL West lead, though consistency has been elusive this season.
Houston will look to build momentum when the series continues Friday, while the Rays aim to reassert their dominance. Both clubs are expected to be active ahead of the trade deadline, with Tampa Bay seeking bullpen depth and the Astros exploring rotation upgrades.
"We never feel like we're out of it," Alvarez said through a translator afterward. "Even when we're down, we believe in this lineup." Rays manager Kevin Cash acknowledged the disappointment but noted, "You can't win them all. We'll reset tomorrow."
