OpenAI held its second livestream this week, teasing “the next chapter for ChatGPT.” The company has merged its Codex and ChatGPT desktop apps for Mac and Windows into a single new ChatGPT desktop app, enabling users to switch between modes like Codex, Chat, and Work.

The move brings Codex workflows—previously a separate product—directly into the main ChatGPT interface. The release includes a new ChatGPT Work agent, signaling OpenAI’s push beyond conversational AI into task-oriented tools for enterprise users.

GPT-5.6 models are now available as part of the update. The company also launched a hosted sites service for OpenAI customers, allowing users to deploy AI-powered web applications without managing infrastructure.

The unified app simplifies access for developers and knowledge workers, but it also places OpenAI in more direct competition with platforms like Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini. The Work agent, in particular, targets productivity automation—a space where adoption depends on reliability and integration.

Some analysts caution that merging development and chat tools could overwhelm casual users. OpenAI has not disclosed pricing for the new hosted sites service.
