Stephen Huang, 55, a veteran of Apple, Amazon, and MediaTek, has launched Tranxform AI, a Taiwan-based startup designing power-efficient AI processors. The company debuted at the Computex trade show this year and now employs about 40 people.

Huang spent decades in Silicon Valley before ChatGPT’s 2022 debut convinced him the market was ready. “I felt the market had arrived,” he said. His prior roles included work on MediaTek’s GPUs, Apple’s Face ID technology, and Amazon’s AI chip team.

Tranxform is building processors optimized to run AI models outside large data centers—an approach known as edge inference. The company expects its first chip to be ready next year. Huang believes deep experience matters more than youthful speed in hardware development.

The startup enters a crowded field of AI chip companies, competing with incumbents like Nvidia and an influx of new entrants. Huang’s Taiwan base offers access to talent and supply chain advantages.

Huang's late-career pivot underscores a broader trend of seasoned engineers chasing opportunities in the AI hardware boom. His first product will be closely watched.
