Latvijas Valsts Mezi (LVM), a state-owned Latvian forestry company, is still restoring systems weeks after a ransomware attack officials attribute to a foreign, financially motivated group. The firm has not disclosed a timeline for full recovery or whether a ransom was paid.
Mount Royal University in Calgary, Canada, confirmed that hackers accessed its internal network and deleted two drives containing employee, student, and university data. The institution stated it is working with law enforcement and cybersecurity experts to investigate the breach.
While LVM's attack was linked to financially motivated actors, the university has not identified the group behind its incident. Both organizations said they are notifying affected individuals and implementing additional security measures.
The cybersecurity community notes that such attacks on educational and state-owned entities remain common, often exploiting unpatched systems or phishing lures.
