Russia launched a major missile and drone attack on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv overnight, striking residential buildings and a hotel. The assault came hours after President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Moscow was planning a “massive” attack.
The strikes, described as the largest in weeks, used ballistic and cruise missiles along with drones. They hit civilian infrastructure and trapped residents under rubble of a collapsed apartment building, prompting Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko to urge residents to take shelter.
The BBC reports at least eight people killed, while the Guardian cites two dead and 16 injured. DW News now says at least ten dead and dozens wounded. The Washington Examiner reports at least 11 injured from the attack that began early Thursday morning local time.
The attack underscores Russia's continued targeting of Ukrainian cities despite diplomatic efforts. It follows Zelensky's public warning and comes as neighboring Poland scrambled jets and Finland restricted airspace in response to the escalating aerial threat.
Ukrainian military officials said waves of drones and missiles entered the airspace overnight, with multiple explosions heard across the city. The full extent of casualties and damage is still being assessed.
