Australia-based Firmus Technologies Pty Ltd. has announced its first data center project in Indonesia, partnering with Nvidia to build a massive AI factory campus on the island of Batam. The facility, dubbed the Nvidia DSX AI factory, will boast a capacity of 360 megawatts, positioning it as a significant player in the region's growing digital infrastructure market.

The project is being developed jointly with DayOne, marking a strategic expansion of AI compute resources in Southeast Asia. Batam's proximity to Singapore and favorable business environment make it an attractive location for such capital-intensive ventures. This move aligns with broader regional efforts to capture a share of the booming AI services industry.

The campus will be designed to support Nvidia's full stack of AI technologies, from chips to software, enabling high-performance computing for enterprises and research institutions. The 360 MW capacity suggests a facility on par with some of the largest data centers globally, though specific investment figures were not disclosed.

For Firmus, this partnership catapults it into the ranks of major data center operators, while Nvidia secures another outlet for its hardware amid surging global demand. The facility is expected to create local jobs and potentially attract downstream AI startups to the region, though construction timelines remain unspecified.

Some analysts question whether Batam's existing power grid and infrastructure can reliably support a facility of this scale, given past challenges with energy consistency in the region.
