BYD has set a new benchmark for its brand with the Great Tang, its largest and most luxurious SUV to date. The vehicle amassed a record 150,000 orders even before its official launch in China, signaling strong domestic demand for high-end electric vehicles.
Now the automaker is turning its attention to international markets. BYD confirmed it will bring the flagship SUV to Europe by the end of 2026, expanding its overseas footprint beyond the more affordable models it has sold there previously.
The Great Tang's presale performance eclipses earlier BYD models, underscoring the company's growing appeal in the premium segment. The move overseas could challenge established European luxury EV makers, though local production and regulatory hurdles remain.
Global EV adoption is accelerating in the luxury tier, and BYD's aggressive pricing strategy may pressure competitors like BMW and Mercedes-Benz. However, the company's success abroad will depend on charging infrastructure and brand perception outside China.
A counterargument is that presale orders do not always translate to firm deliveries. Some analysts caution that early hype in China may not be replicated overseas, where brand loyalty and service networks are still developing for BYD.
