Iridium Communications has completed its acquisition of Aireon, integrating the aircraft-tracking venture fully into its business. The move comes as the satellite operator prepares for its planned $8 billion sale to Rocket Lab.

Aireon provides global real-time aircraft surveillance using Iridium's satellite network, enabling enhanced aviation safety and tracking. By bringing the service fully in-house, Iridium consolidates control over the technology ahead of the ownership change.

The takeover closes before Iridium's merger with Rocket Lab, which was announced as an $8 billion deal. The transaction is expected to reshape the satellite communications and space launch landscape.

Rocket Lab, known for its Electron and Neutron launch vehicles, aims to expand into satellite services through the acquisition. The combined entity would integrate launch capabilities with Iridium's operational constellation and Aireon's aviation applications.

Some analysts question whether the premium paid for Iridium reflects realistic synergies, given Rocket Lab's primary focus on launch services and spacecraft manufacturing rather than satcom operations. The deal's close remains subject to regulatory approvals.
