Alex Ovechkin scored his 1,000th career NHL goal combining regular season and playoffs during the Washington Capitals' 3-2 overtime loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday. The milestone goal, Ovechkin's 26th of the season, came from his signature power-play position and tied the game with 5:43 remaining in regulation.
The achievement places Ovechkin in exclusive company, though he remains behind Wayne Gretzky's combined total of 1,016 goals. Gretzky accumulated 894 regular season goals and holds the playoff record with 122 postseason tallies, a mark that still stands today.
