Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) told Axios she will "most likely" vote for House Democrats' resolution to constrain President Trump from waging war with Iran when it comes up for another vote. The South Carolina Republican declared that "war with Iran needs to end" and said she won't vote "to send South Carolina's sons and daughters into battle to die for the price of oil."

Mace's shift represents a significant break with her party and puts additional pressure on House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.). The congresswoman emerged as a fierce critic of the Iran war this week, previously stating she would vote against funding further operations in the region before going further with her war powers stance.

A similar war powers resolution was narrowly defeated earlier this month in a 212-219 vote, with four House Democrats breaking from their leadership to vote against the measure. However, most if not all of those Democrats are expected to flip their votes the next time party leadership forces such a vote, according to Axios reporting.

Mace's expected support, combined with the anticipated Democratic vote changes, could provide enough votes to pass the resolution and deliver a symbolic rebuke to the Trump administration. Two Republicans, Warren Davidson of Ohio and Thomas Massie of Kentucky, previously voted for the war powers resolution and show little indication of changing their position.

While the vote would be largely symbolic since Trump could veto any measure that passes both chambers, it would represent a rare bipartisan challenge to presidential war powers and Middle East policy.
