Robert Mueller, the former FBI director who served as special counsel investigating President Trump and Russian interference in the 2016 election, died Friday night at age 81. His family had disclosed last year that he was battling Parkinson's disease.

Mueller led the FBI for 12 years during the Bush and Obama administrations before being appointed special counsel in 2017 by deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein. His mandate was to investigate allegations that Russia conspired with others to interfere with and influence the outcome of the 2016 election.
