Strangers are increasingly gathering over tea and cake to discuss death through meetups called Death Cafes. The concept, which launched in East London in 2011, has spread globally with more than 11,000 groups now listed in the United States alone. Participants engage in what organizers describe as tangible, factual conversations about mortality.
The movement aims to make discussions about death less taboo by providing structured social settings for these conversations. Death Cafes operate as informal discussion groups rather than grief counseling or religious gatherings. Participants typically introduce themselves and share what brought them to the group before diving into topics ranging from mortality to cremation and burial options.
