Italian defense contractor Leonardo has completed its $1.9 billion acquisition of Iveco's land vehicle division, marking a significant expansion into ground-based military systems. The company stated that "available cash resources" will finance the transaction, indicating strong balance sheet capacity for the major strategic move.
The acquisition strengthens Leonardo's position in the European defense market by adding established land vehicle capabilities to its aerospace and electronics portfolio. This vertical integration allows the company to offer more comprehensive defense solutions to NATO allies and positions it to compete more effectively against larger defense conglomerates like BAE Systems and Rheinmetall.
The deal comes as European nations increase defense spending following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, with particular emphasis on ground-based systems and armor modernization. Leonardo plans to leverage "the complementary nature of the two companies' sales networks" to maximize synergies from the transaction.
