Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.), chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, lost his primary Tuesday to democratic socialist Darializa Avila Chevalier, according to the Associated Press. The result represents a major blow to the Democratic establishment.
The race drew national attention and millions in outside spending, reflecting growing frustration among liberal grassroots with party leaders. Both candidates benefited from significant financial backing from outside groups.
BOLD America, which received funds from both the Congressional Hispanic Caucus' super PAC and AIPAC's United Democracy Project, was the largest spender, putting $2.9 million into defending Espaillat. Other groups spending for him included the CHC's BOLD PAC ($230,000), Latino Victory Fund ($750,000), Progressive Unity Fund, Project 218, and United for Progress.
On the other side, the left-wing Justice Democrats spent $1.5 million supporting Avila Chevalier, while American Priorities — a super PAC founded to counter AIPAC — added $1.3 million. The outcome signals growing influence of progressive challengers targeting incumbents.
Critics argue that such primary challenges can divide the party and weaken its chances in general elections, though supporters see them as necessary to push the party leftward.
