A 26-year-old Russian citizen, Aleksei Olegovich Volkov, has been sentenced to 6.75 years in federal prison for his role in facilitating ransomware attacks against U.S. companies and organizations. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Volkov assisted major cybercrime groups, including the Yanluowang ransomware crew, in conducting numerous cyberattacks.
The sentencing represents a significant enforcement action against international ransomware operations that have caused extensive damage to American businesses. The attacks facilitated by Volkov resulted in $9 million in damages across dozens of ransomware incidents targeting various organizations.
