NASA's Hubble Space Telescope captured an extremely rare astronomical phenomenon when it unexpectedly observed comet C/2025 K1 (ATLAS) breaking apart in space. The comet, also known as K1, was caught fragmenting during what NASA described as a chance observation with extraordinarily minuscule odds of occurring.

The findings from this serendipitous discovery were published Wednesday in the journal Icarus. The spacecraft's instruments documented the comet's breakup process, providing scientists with valuable real-time data on how these icy bodies disintegrate when subjected to various forces in space.
