The European Union is considering incorporating waste incineration facilities into its Emissions Trading System (ETS), according to discussions in Brussels. The move would subject refuse incineration operations to carbon pricing mechanisms for the first time, applying the polluter-pays principle to waste management emissions.

Waste incineration currently represents a significant source of carbon emissions outside the EU's carbon trading framework. Including these facilities in the ETS would create financial incentives for waste operators to reduce their carbon footprint and invest in cleaner technologies.
