Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation officially announced a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, the animated film that became Netflix's most-watched movie of all time. Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will return to helm the project as part of a new multiyear exclusive partnership with Netflix focused on animation.

The original film's success exceeded all expectations after Sony handed the rights to Netflix in 2021 as part of a broader licensing deal. KPop Demon Hunters is nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song at the 98th Academy Awards, positioning it as a serious contender in both categories.

The film's popularity prompted Netflix to break from its streaming-first model and release it theatrically, where it earned over $19 million during a two-day initial run in August 2025. Netflix has since brought the film back to theaters multiple times, demonstrating sustained audience demand.

The sequel represents Netflix's continued investment in original animated content and highlights the growing global appeal of Korean storytelling in mainstream entertainment. Kang expressed pride in the audience's embrace of Korean characters and culture, indicating plans to expand the fictional universe further.

The announcement signals Netflix's commitment to building franchises around successful original content, particularly in animation where it competes with traditional studios like Disney and Pixar.
