President Trump was hastily evacuated from the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday night after Secret Service personnel shot a suspected gunman who tried to breach security, according to federal law enforcement officials who spoke to Axios.
A suspect fired at Secret Service agents and is now in custody, a law enforcement source told Axios. Trump plans to deliver a statement at the White House later Saturday. One official said a Secret Service agent was hit in protective equipment but is okay.
The gunman was apprehended in the hotel lobby before reaching the magnetometers, a second source briefed by the FBI on the incident said. This meant Trump was not in immediate danger of being shot. However, some attendees noted the magnetometers were positioned immediately outside the ballroom rather than at the hotel entrance, allowing the alleged gunman to get closer than usual.
Armed agents fanned out across the ballroom to secure the safety of administration officials. After Trump's evacuation, Secret Service agents stood on the dais with their guns drawn but pointed downward, scanning the crowd. The Vice President was also evacuated alongside the President.
