Uber Technologies is relaunching its robotaxi service in Las Vegas through a partnership with Motional, the autonomous vehicle company backed by Hyundai Motor. The service will operate with human safety drivers behind the wheel until the end of 2026, marking a cautious approach to fully autonomous operations.

This move comes as the autonomous vehicle industry faces mounting pressure to demonstrate commercial viability. Previous robotaxi pilots by various companies have struggled with technical challenges and regulatory hurdles, leading to scaled-back operations and partnerships rather than independent deployments.

Uber's return to the robotaxi space follows its 2020 decision to sell its self-driving unit to Aurora Innovation. The company is now taking a platform approach, partnering with technology providers rather than developing autonomous systems in-house.

The Las Vegas deployment will serve as a testing ground for broader autonomous vehicle integration across Uber's network. Success in this market could accelerate similar partnerships in other cities, while continued reliance on safety drivers reflects ongoing uncertainty about fully driverless operations.
